Week 13 - Activity 5

What is left to do? Since I wrote my last blog I have made some small changes to my course.  I have made some small revisions to the modules to clean up the content a bit more.  I also finalized a couple of handouts that I had left incomplete.  I also changed my landing page and if time permits, I might change it again.  I need to go back and review all my course links and make sure they are all still active and opening the right pages.  Once I get these done, I will try downloading my course and see how that process goes as I don’t want to wait until the final week to do this, in case I run into issues. What challenges have you faced?  Will you be able to meet your timeline for completion?  Why or why not? Will you be able to implement? Evaluate? I haven’t faced too many challenges other than trying to complete all the work before the end of the semester.  I have reached the point in my project where I need to be able to see any mistak...

Week 11, Activity 4 Blog

By the end of this week, your full initial development must be completed. Were you able to finish according to your timeline? Why or why not?  What technology challenges have you faced? What “people” challenges have you faced? How have you sought to overcome these difficulties? What have you learned about completing a major project within a professional deadline? What will you do differently next time? I was able to finish my initial development according to this course timeline.  As far as people challenges, the only problem I had in this class was with my first peer reviewer partner getting sick early on and not communicating with me.  But ever since I was paired up with my second partner, I have no complaints.  I’ve had effective communication with her, except for this week when she didn’t receive my review through email.  I like my partner’s honesty in her peer reviews and I hope she finds my peer reviews useful.  I have found her suggestions very ...

Week 10

There is not much time left in the session to complete your project, so it is a good time to think about what needs to be done. What is left to do? What challenges have you faced? Will you be able to meet your timeline for completion? Why or why not? Will you be able to implement? Evaluate? When I started working on my Canvas course I went full speed, wanting to avoid getting panicky in the last few weeks of the semester.  I spent the better part of two weeks working on the course just about every day.  In the last couple of weeks, I have made minor changes to my course, corrections, etc.  I feel that at this point, my course is about 90% completed so I don’t believe I will have any trouble meeting the timeline.  What Is Left To Do I need to review my all of my discussion board items and clean them up a bit.  I wanted to take some time away from my course so that I can come in with a fresh perspective.  I tend to become blind to problems with my work...

Week 8 Blog - Peer Review Feedback

What feedback have you received and what have you done as a result? Why? My partner reviewed my course and she was able to point out a couple of things that didn’t make sense and that needed to be removed from my course content.  She also suggested I use a different picture for my course image, one of a half-marathon starting/finishing line.  Although I did consider her suggestion, I decided to keep the current image with the simple 13.1 for a couple of reasons.  One, anyone wanting to run a half-marathon will recognize the 13.1 as the half-marathon distance and two because my course would not be attached to a specific half-marathon.  My partner also gave me some positive feedback.  She mentioned she liked that I included the Using Canvas page for students who would be new to this environment.  She also likes that I included the Etiquette page.  She didn’t suggest any changes to my module structure and that makes me happy as I spent a long t...

Week 7 Blog - Activity 3

You have completed a rough version of ½ of your full course now. Have you had to revise your design based on the structure of the LMS? How well is the design model working for you? Since week 5, when I first started developing my course in Canvas, I have changed my course structure many, many times.  At the beginning of week 5, I had a specific structure of the sequence of the items in the module but then on week 6, I rearranged everything to add my weekly learning objectives.  In week 7, I have changed the structure again, trying to make the structure flow a bit better.  As a student, I have a preference as to how my courses are structured.  I like to do the assignments first, then the quizzes, and at the end any blog or discussion board posts.  I feel it makes more sense to do the same with my course.  As I have added more assignments, links, and blogs, I have continued to make changes not only to the course but also to the syllabus.  Goin...

Activity 3: Blog Reflection for Week 6

Reflect on the following items: You have begun putting together your full course. What has gone well? What has challenged you? What feedback have you received? What feedback have you given? What have you learned from the process of developing instruction in an LMS? I started putting my course together in week 5 as I am trying not to procrastinate in this class because from week 7 on, I will need to rely on my time management skills.   I am so used to the Blackboard environment so there has been a learning curve as far understanding the structure of Canvas.   I am still not sure how some things work in Canvas but I think I am learning a lot through the development of my course.   For me, there is nothing better than hands-on learning.   The one area I’ve had difficulty with is placing links.   Canvas doesn’t allow for the use of some links and I find that a bit annoying.   The workaround has been for me to create a content page and the...

Activity 4 - Blog Reflection on "Instructional Design Model"

For this week's reflection blog, we are to find an instructional design (ID) model that we are not familiar with and answer some questions.  I had never heard of the ASSURE model, is a six-step ID Model that provides a way to successfully integrate media and technology in the student learning process.  ASSURE is an acronym that stands for: A - Analyze learning S – State standards & objectives S – Select strategies, technology, media & materials U – Utilize technology, media & materials R – Require learner participation E – Evaluate & revise What is the point of this model? This model uses Robert Gagne’s events of instruct to assure effective use of media in instruction and its main point is that learners attributes, such as age, gender, interests, academic abilities, learning styles, prior competencies, etc. are first analyzed prior to creating any goals and objectives, strategies and technology media, and materials. How is the model dif...

Week 3 - Blog Reflection 2

For week 3, we were asked to reflect on our experience with the instructional design document and our peer review.  The main purpose of this reflection is to write about what we learned, the changes that took place due to our learning, and how we used the feedback.  I was dreading this assignment but one has no choice but to keep moving and doing our best. I have learned and grown a lot as an instructional designer this week.  Working on the instructional design document has been one of the most challenging and yet rewarding assignments I have ever worked on.  I say this because writing is a weakness of mine and because I have very little experience with the analysis phase of instructional design.  I had to work hard and put in a lot of hours just to get the analysis design document in decent shape.  I must admit, I had issues with just about every section of the analysis document. The area which I struggled the most was the goals and objectives....
Intro My name is Carmina and this is my blog space for course 5510 Technology-Based Learning Environment Section 080.  I’m hoping to complete the MSLT program at the end of summer 2017.  I work for a dental college in North Texas and I hope that after completing this program, I will be promoted.  I have never used Canvas before and I’m very excited yet nervous about building a whole course in a new environment in which I know very little of. A little about me.  I am originally from central Mexico but have lived in Dallas most of my life.  I love watching Netflix original series from all around the world.  Netflix has some great international shows.  I just finished watching "Club de Cuervos", a Netflix original show that takes place in a made-up town in Mexico.  The show is all in Spanish but I recommended even to those who do not know this language.  The story is silly but well written and the acting is superb.  This is the first...
