Activity 3: Blog Reflection for Week 6

Reflect on the following items:
You have begun putting together your full course. What has gone well? What has challenged you? What feedback have you received? What feedback have you given? What have you learned from the process of developing instruction in an LMS?
I started putting my course together in week 5 as I am trying not to procrastinate in this class because from week 7 on, I will need to rely on my time management skills.  I am so used to the Blackboard environment so there has been a learning curve as far understanding the structure of Canvas.  I am still not sure how some things work in Canvas but I think I am learning a lot through the development of my course.  For me, there is nothing better than hands-on learning.  The one area I’ve had difficulty with is placing links.  Canvas doesn’t allow for the use of some links and I find that a bit annoying.  The workaround has been for me to create a content page and then enter the link in the text area in the content page.

I started with the creation of the assignments.  I really like this feature in Canvas as it allows to group assignments together in a chronological order, is a super handy tool.  What I like is that Canvas allows lets you create the structure of the assignment without having to enter all the information right then and there, like Blackboard.  I then went ahead and disabled the course menu items I won’t be needing.  Then finally this week, I spent three days creating my Getting Started module and my first four modules.  I still should go in and create a few more things and get going with my first quiz and add my learning objectives.  I am also working on finalizing my syllabus, although I wish I had my design document back to know what corrections need to be made.

I have already contacted my partner and have added her as an instructor.  I was very happy with Rana’s review of my instructional design document in week 4 and I am very glad she agreed to work with me again.  I didn’t want to end up having to scramble again trying to find a partner.  I’m confident Rana is going to be very honest with her review and will point things out to me that I might not see.

I have received some feedback from my instructor as far as the recommended items required for week 6.  I wasn’t sure how to place the theory, purpose, problems and goals and objectives within the design of the course.  The courses in which I have helped construct in the past, the faculty typically takes care of this and I typically see these items in the syllabus.  The only items I have seen outside the syllabus are the learning objectives, which I have seen posted in the weekly modules.  I’m still unsure how to do so but I’m hoping my partner will be able to provide me with some direction.  In all, I’m happy with my progress, particularly since I am keeping up with all the assignments.

Week 13 - Activity 5

What is left to do? Since I wrote my last blog I have made some small changes to my course.  I have made some small revisions to the modules to clean up the content a bit more.  I also finalized a couple of handouts that I had left incomplete.  I also changed my landing page and if time permits, I might change it again.  I need to go back and review all my course links and make sure they are all still active and opening the right pages.  Once I get these done, I will try downloading my course and see how that process goes as I don’t want to wait until the final week to do this, in case I run into issues. What challenges have you faced?  Will you be able to meet your timeline for completion?  Why or why not? Will you be able to implement? Evaluate? I haven’t faced too many challenges other than trying to complete all the work before the end of the semester.  I have reached the point in my project where I need to be able to see any mistak...

Week 3 - Blog Reflection 2

For week 3, we were asked to reflect on our experience with the instructional design document and our peer review.  The main purpose of this reflection is to write about what we learned, the changes that took place due to our learning, and how we used the feedback.  I was dreading this assignment but one has no choice but to keep moving and doing our best. I have learned and grown a lot as an instructional designer this week.  Working on the instructional design document has been one of the most challenging and yet rewarding assignments I have ever worked on.  I say this because writing is a weakness of mine and because I have very little experience with the analysis phase of instructional design.  I had to work hard and put in a lot of hours just to get the analysis design document in decent shape.  I must admit, I had issues with just about every section of the analysis document. The area which I struggled the most was the goals and objectives....
