Week 11, Activity 4 Blog

By the end of this week, your full initial development must be completed. Were you able to finish according to your timeline? Why or why not?  What technology challenges have you faced? What “people” challenges have you faced? How have you sought to overcome these difficulties? What have you learned about completing a major project within a professional deadline? What will you do differently next time?

I was able to finish my initial development according to this course timeline.  As far as people challenges, the only problem I had in this class was with my first peer reviewer partner getting sick early on and not communicating with me.  But ever since I was paired up with my second partner, I have no complaints.  I’ve had effective communication with her, except for this week when she didn’t receive my review through email.  I like my partner’s honesty in her peer reviews and I hope she finds my peer reviews useful.  I have found her suggestions very helpful.

I don’t know if I have mentioned this before but I prefer to work as an individual and not in a group.  Right now in a different class, I am working on a project very similar to the one in this course but the only difference is that we are working in groups and with a real client.  I feel like working in groups is a disadvantage to me in my style of learning and working as I don’t like to depend on others.  Having said that, I have really enjoyed having a peer reviewer but I feel that in this course, there is a need for a peer reviewer and is not just something to keep us students occupied.

What were your strengths as a designer?
Is hard to say what my strengths are but if I were to guess is that I like to complete my work and projects as soon as possible.  I used to be a bad procrastinator when it came to homework, although I have never been a procrastinator at work.  A year ago, I made the decision to think of school work as another job so that I could change my behavior and do the work as soon as possible.  Another strength is that I find it easy to learn new applications, as was the case with Canvas.  It only took me a few days to get comfortable in the Canvas environment since I had never used any other LMS other than Blackboard.

What do you need to improve?

I need to learn how to write proper quiz/exam questions.  I have never sat down and learned the proper way.  I also need to learn how to think critically and add critical thinking tasks into a course (assignments).  And although I feel a bit more comfortable working with goals and objectives, this is still an area I need to go back to and learn some more.  In all, this has been a great course that has thought me a lot.  If I were to do it all over again, I don’t believe I would change the topic of my course nor the content.

Week 13 - Activity 5

What is left to do? Since I wrote my last blog I have made some small changes to my course.  I have made some small revisions to the modules to clean up the content a bit more.  I also finalized a couple of handouts that I had left incomplete.  I also changed my landing page and if time permits, I might change it again.  I need to go back and review all my course links and make sure they are all still active and opening the right pages.  Once I get these done, I will try downloading my course and see how that process goes as I don’t want to wait until the final week to do this, in case I run into issues. What challenges have you faced?  Will you be able to meet your timeline for completion?  Why or why not? Will you be able to implement? Evaluate? I haven’t faced too many challenges other than trying to complete all the work before the end of the semester.  I have reached the point in my project where I need to be able to see any mistak...

Activity 3: Blog Reflection for Week 6

Reflect on the following items: You have begun putting together your full course. What has gone well? What has challenged you? What feedback have you received? What feedback have you given? What have you learned from the process of developing instruction in an LMS? I started putting my course together in week 5 as I am trying not to procrastinate in this class because from week 7 on, I will need to rely on my time management skills.   I am so used to the Blackboard environment so there has been a learning curve as far understanding the structure of Canvas.   I am still not sure how some things work in Canvas but I think I am learning a lot through the development of my course.   For me, there is nothing better than hands-on learning.   The one area I’ve had difficulty with is placing links.   Canvas doesn’t allow for the use of some links and I find that a bit annoying.   The workaround has been for me to create a content page and the...

Week 3 - Blog Reflection 2

For week 3, we were asked to reflect on our experience with the instructional design document and our peer review.  The main purpose of this reflection is to write about what we learned, the changes that took place due to our learning, and how we used the feedback.  I was dreading this assignment but one has no choice but to keep moving and doing our best. I have learned and grown a lot as an instructional designer this week.  Working on the instructional design document has been one of the most challenging and yet rewarding assignments I have ever worked on.  I say this because writing is a weakness of mine and because I have very little experience with the analysis phase of instructional design.  I had to work hard and put in a lot of hours just to get the analysis design document in decent shape.  I must admit, I had issues with just about every section of the analysis document. The area which I struggled the most was the goals and objectives....
